In my response to "Made Not Only In Words: Composition In A New Key", Dr. Coxwell-Teague highlighted a question I quoted that has given me pause. Previous to Literature, I was in the Masters in English Education program, and left that program precisely because of this question namely: "How is it what we teach and what we test can be so different from what our students know as writing?" Standards forcing students to write such dry, and un-engaging pieces in the name of standardized testing really rubbed me the wrong way, and those are the students that are coming into our classrooms as composition instructors. Being prepared for those students and almost 'breaking' them of those habits is so important, and teaching them to engage in multiple writing practices that allow them to explore the different ways to write to different audiences, so that they know how to communicate with the world around them as effectively as possible.
