A comment I received on this from Erin suggested I come up with some strategies to avoid problematic behaviors in the classroom. While I fully believe that the classroom should be a safe space for students to explore their personal beliefs outside of their home environment and come into their own views, its important to keep in mind that those opinions may offend or upset other students. Modeling behavior in the classroom on how to respectfully listen to and consider others opinions and points of view is important, as well as including the civility clause in the syllabus. I've also thought that maybe passing out a civility clause for students to sign in the beginning of the semester may add some more weight behind it.
